Free trials that turn into charges: the two-day rule

Every streaming service, cloud plan and app subscription offers a free week or a free month, and asks for a card or a UPI mandate to start it. The trial ends on a date nobody wrote down, the first charge goes through, and the cancel button turns out to live three menus deep in an app you have stopped opening.

Why two days, not the day

On the last day of a trial the renewal can run at any hour, and in the evening you find out you are a paying customer. Two days ahead leaves time to decide calmly, to find the cancel page, and to wait out the app that says it will take up to a day to process the change.

What to write down when you start one

  • The day the trial ends, from the confirmation email, not from memory.
  • How to cancel: the app, the website, the store subscription page, or the bank's mandate list for a UPI autopay.
  • What it will cost after, so the decision on the day is a real one.

How EasyDooo does it

Add the subscription in Bills and dues on the Budget page from the subscription template. It can record when its free trial ends: a task called "Free trial ends" with the subscription's name appears in Tasks and reminds you two days before, in the daily reminder like any other. The bill also keeps a note on how to cancel it, so the reminder and the way out are in the same place.

Keep it, and the bill carries on as a monthly subscription with its own reminder before each renewal and a yearly total on the Bills card. Stop it, and stop the bill: its reminders go with it.
